Calculating daily noise exposures in a noise assessment can be hellishly complicated but as I am very nice, this is a noise exposure calculator anyone can use.
This noise exposure calculator can give a daily noise exposure - the daily noise dose as needed in a noise assessment - using a single noise level and single duration, or it can combine multiple noise levels and durations and calculate a single daily exposure from those - useful where someone does multiple jobs in a day.
A reminder on the noise limits at work:
If the resulting noise dose is 80 to 84 dB(A) then noise safety training is needed and hearing protection should be available but usage can be optional
If the resulting noise exposure is 85 dB(A) or over then hearing protection is mandatory as is health surveillance (hearing testing).
Weekly noise exposure calculator
If noise exposures vary a lot and someone has a significant noise exposure on one or two days but nothing on others, the HSE do allow for a weekly noise exposure / weekly noise dose to be used.
An example of this could be volunteers working in a theatre or music event staff who get a significant exposure on one or two days a week but then nothing for the rest of it.
Or, if an employer is looking at using job rotation to control noise exposures, enter the daily level for each day and use it to make sure the weekly exposure is below the 85 dB(A) limit. If that can be done, then the hearing protection and health surveillance provisions may then not apply.
